The Boy Least Likely To, 4.5 stars.

I found this small band through the Rolling Stone section on up-and-comers. Now I think as a preface, I should state that these guys will never be big pop stars in America. They are too creative. These guys have to put together a really strong album, and I hope to convince you to buy it. I bought “The Best Party Ever” just over a month ago. I like to give my reviews after that amount of time. I think that writing a review on music takes awhile, you have to let the music diffuse into you. I can’t listen to a song once and tell you my opinions, unless its Jessica Simpson’s new song, and then I can tell you it’s utter crap.
The two guys who make up The Boy Least Likely To are young British kids. Instead of following the trend of making some punky rather unstimulating guitar riffs (I do like punk though), these guys crafted their lyrics around well formed and extremely creative instrumental tunes. In an attempt to tap into the incredibley addictive nastalgia of childhood, these guys fused adult topics with childish melodies. The product is an interesting commentary sung to catchy beats and jingles. I can’t express how interesting these tunes are. You have to at least listen to the 30-second previews (sorry you won’t hear these guys on the radio). “Be Gentle With Me” fuses lyrics like “If I wasn’t so happy, I wouldn’t be so scared of dying” with chirpy charms from a vast array of instruments. After listening to this song, the melody, the memorable groove, the unbelievable creativity keep you coming back for more. They entice you into listening to other songs like “I’m Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon to Your Star,” which in my opinion contains their best combination of bizarre instruments. The union of these creates an unforgettable moment when you think you already heard this song before. The melody envokes some childhood recall that just fills you with soothing calm. I know a lot of this sounds a little lame, but these guys really have crafted a fantastic album. They understood the impact of childhood melodies and combined that with some provoking lyrics to create this great collection. Some songs seem to flow right alongside Sgt. Pepper while others feel strangely like tunes picked from Zelda music. Nevertheless, these guys have tapped into emotions and feelings through this new type of music, and I am loving it.
